Winston GVX 8'6" 4wt

For sale is a custom built Winston GVX 8'6" 4wt 4pc Fly Rod. I have taken it out and cast and fished it a couple times and will describe it like this. It is a progressive loading, buttery "Winston Smooth" casting and feeling rod. It very much feels like an updated 4pc Winston WT rod would feel.

It has a CCS ERN of 4.16 and an AA of 66. It weighs 3.37 ounces.

This rod is pure dry fly fishing heaven. It is "okay" at throwing small indicator rigs. It is pretty nice throwing small leeches & streamers. It is nice enough for throwing smaller (sz 10 max) hopper-dropper rigs. With a fish on it is a fantastic fly rod.

I recently acquired this custom Winston GVX 8'6" 4wt rod in a trade. It was built by a very good rod builder who does outstanding work. The blank Serial Number is hand written on each section just like the factory rods.

This rod was built to resemble a factory Winston rod with a couple subtle differences. The rod differs from the factory Winston GVX rods in these ways:

-The reel seat is a REC NBS nickel silver hardware with a fantastic figured Box Elder Burl insert (much nicer than factory GVX)
-The cork grip is 7" long instead of 6-1/2" factory grip (but nowhere near the factory Winston quality cork)
-The chromed snake guides are the Heavy Hopkins & Holloway guides
-The stripping guide is a size 12 TiCh guide with TiCh insert
-There is a silver band in the red butt section trim wraps
-The rod was wrapped using the guide spacing for a Sage VXP (don't think it matters at all on this particular blank)

Pricing this is tough, so here are my thoughts on it. A Factory rod is $495. $250 shipped is roughly 50% discount. A similar quality GVX blank kit on ebay is $260 ( unassembled ) Labor to build a rod is typically $120 more.

SO, I am asking $250 obo shipped for this particular rod only (no case or cloth). You are basically getting free labor. You are definitely getting a far superior fly rod to ANY Import rod.

Now, I also have a brand new carbon fiber Factory Winston logo'd BIIIx rod case and cloth ( $140 if you buy them from Winston) that fits this rod. I was saving this for a Winston BIIt 4wt I am considering building myself but will include it with this GVX rod for an additional $75.00.

PM me if you are interested. I am open to trade offers of like kind / value as well.

New Zealand fly fishing

A brief update on my introduction dated 9 Sept 2011. Following the resignation from office of the former minister, NZ now has a new Minister for the Environment. She is the Hon Amy Adams. Her email address is a.adams@ministers.govt.nz.

Comments by visiting anglers on how much they value NZ's clean waterways will help us keep things that way (as will statements that you will happily spend your tourist dollars elsewhere if water quality deteriorates).

Finally, with didymo in many South Island waterways, please try to plan your trip so you fish North Island first, then go south. That will eliminate the possibility of transferring the pest into rivers currently not contaminated.

ASF Salmon River Notes Blog Back - Analyzes 2011 Runs

News from the Atlantic Salmon Federation

Rivernotes Back!
The ASF Rivernotes Blog is in operation again, with angling season open in some areas. There are a couple of notes on the new season, but most of it is devoted to the overwinter analysis of the excellent salmon runs of 2011.
http://atlanticsalmonfederation.org/rivernotes/

ASF researchers on Friday were adhering satellite transmitters and surgically implanting acoustic transmitters on the Miramichi. Read the full story on this fascinating work that is helping unravel both salmon migrations and mortality at sea.
http://asf.ca/news.php?id=862

Meanwhile on the Hammond River where all Atlantic salmon have been assessed as endangered, it appears some anglers have not got the word. Read more.
http://asf.ca/news.php?id=863

For a different overview of the past year, ASF's 2011 Annual Report is available for download. Among the highlights are the advances in land-based aquaculture and the study detailing the high economic value of the wild Atlantic salmon.
http://asf.ca/docs/annual/asf-2011.pdf

Aquaculture continues to cause controversy.
In Nova Scotia, there continue to be strong calls for a moratorium until better understanding of the impacts. But in Ireland there has been published a report calling for aquaculture to be placed offshore due to the interactions involving sea lice.
